Care Home Services

Local pharmacies providing services for the local community

Care homes across Scotland benefit from the services provided by our local network of community pharmacies, backed by the support and expertise from senior staff at Head Office.

This personal service enables you to develop a strong working relationship with your local pharmacist and provide the optimum level of care for your clients.

Our pharmacies have already developed excellent links with local surgeries, ensuring we are all working together as a team to provide the highest standard of care to your clients.

Access to our Medication Training Platform for our current partners

Every care home is unique, and it is essential that we recognise this to provide the best possible service. We believe it is important to work closely with each care home to tailor our services accordingly.

Our services to care homes include:

  • Medication provided in Original Packs, following current best practice guidelines.
  • Medication Administration Record (MAR) sheets for each client as needed, along with detailed reorder sheets.
  • The option to use electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) if required by the care service.
  • Additional recording sheets, such as Topical MAR sheets, are also available.
  • We also assist by delivering repeat prescription requests to surgeries and collecting them on your behalf when ready. Original prescriptions will be sent to the care home for checking before being processed by the pharmacy.
  • Regular medication is delivered at least two working days before the start of the 28-day cycle, provided it is ordered in accordance with the timetables supplied.
  • Interim prescriptions are delivered regularly, at times convenient for the care home, including alignment with GP visits, etc.
  • Each care home will have a designated ‘Key Contact’ within the pharmacy to ensure continuity of service and maintain strong relations between the care home and the pharmacy.

It is essential for care services to ensure their staff are appropriately trained to administer medication. We can support you in achieving this by providing free training on Medication Administration for the care services we supply with medication.

High-quality training benefits your care home in several ways:

  • Staff will be equipped to provide a superior service to your clients.
  • Staff will feel valued and appreciate the investment in their skills and development.
  • Improved staff retention rates benefit both the care home and its residents.

Our Courses Include:

For staff members new to administering medication, we offer an in-depth Medicines Management in Care Homes course. This online course can be completed at a time that suits the care homes needs.

For staff who already administer medication, it is equally important to receive regular training and stay up to date with changes. We provide an annual refresher course to meet ongoing training needs. This course is also online and can be accessed at any time.

We can also provide guidance on assessing staff competency regularly, ensuring your staff consistently work to the highest standards.

Davidsons Chemists’ training packages are regularly updated in line with the latest guidance from the Care Inspectorate and other relevant organisations.

Our pharmacies conduct regular audits in line with local health board arrangements and offer additional visits when needed. During these visits, we review medication storage, ordering systems, and records of medication administration, providing feedback as appropriate.

This helps care homes comply with Care Inspectorate guidelines, ensuring a high standard of care for all residents. This support is integral to our dispensing service and is provided free of charge to our care services.

As well as having a key contact within the branch, a pharmacist is available to answer any additional queries.

All care homes are also supported by our Care Service Lead — Attracta Vardy.

Within Davidsons, we have gained extensive experience and knowledge over many years of working closely with care homes.

We all work together to provide the best person-centred care for all of our patients.
