What is an HbA1c test?
HbA1c is a simple blood test that shows your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. It’s a powerful tool that helps identify problems early or monitor how well your diabetes is being managed.
How does the test work?
When you have sugar (glucose) in your blood, some of it sticks to a protein in your red blood cells called haemoglobin. The more sugar in your blood, the more sticks – and it stays there for the life of the red blood cell (about 2–3 months).
The HbA1c test measures how much sugar has attached, giving a reliable picture of your blood sugar control over time – not just a reading from one day.
The HbA1c test can be used in three key ways:

To check for type 2 diabetes: The most common form of diabetes, type 2 usually develops in adulthood and is linked to lifestyle, age, or family history. The test can help detect it early, even before symptoms appear.

To spot pre-diabetes: If your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet diabetic, you may be pre-diabetic – meaning you’re at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Early action can help prevent or delay it.

To monitor existing diabetes: If you already have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, the HbA1c test is a vital tool to check how well your condition is being managed over time.

The test is done using a simple fingerprick – no fasting, no long waits. We use modern testing equipment to give you an accurate result in just 10 minutes.
